MARSHALL GILBERT ANECDOTES

One of the things I'll always remember about my daddy is his love for telling amusing stories about his past. He also loved to kid around with people about whatever topic jumped in his mind. One of my favorite memories of his humor is whenever Survivor (his favorite TV show) would come on, he would always tell me that he was going to be on the show. To prepare for his TV debut, he said he would put on his Survivor gear while watching the show. Imagining my daddy decked out in island wear makes me giggle every time.

My daddy once told me a story from his army days. I don't know if it's true or not, but it's so funny to think this might have happened. My daddy was part of the army through some of boot camp. Unfortunately, he didn't know what he was getting into and hated it. He tried everything he could to get out of serving. On one of his more desperate attempts to get discharged, my daddy claims he crawled into bed and simply laid down next to one of his buddies to make it look like he was in a homosexual relationship. Since the military looked down on that type of behavior, being that it was in the 70's, he was sure he would be sent on his merry way to a discharge. Unfortunately, the drill sergeant wasn't falling for it. He made the comment, "Gilbert, get out of the bed; you ain't a faggot" (no offense to anyone), and my daddy's dreams of getting out quickly were dashed. So much for that charade.

When my sister and I were younger, we always liked to play tricks on Daddy when we had the chance. I remember at one point in time my sister had this little fake jackpot machine. Every time you pull the handle to spin the dials, a head would pop out the top to soak the unsuspecting participant. Of course, we had to see if Daddy would fall for it. For a couple of years, every time we handed him the game, he would get squirted by the water. He would grumble about falling for it before handing the game back to us. I don't know if he really forgot about the squirting water or if he was just amusing us because we were dumb little kids, but either way, it was always funny to watch my dad get a stream of water in the face from that game.
