Their stares made me feel like I was being pulled under.

BREATHING
by: Stephanie Gilbert

My heart still pounds and races when I think
Of that nerve-racking moment. As I stand
In front of friends and family, the link
Between our past and future in my hand,

I tremble, staring sideways. No contact
With these who watch me. They cannot be there.
I fear big crowds who stare as they attack
With eyes that bore through me and do not care.

Three pages filled with memories, so few
For all we've shared the past twelve years. I speak
Of it quickly as I, in royal blue,
Stand there, knees shaking, my heart pounding, weak

From stress. The tassel shifts and soars and ends
The day. A new and scary journey now begins.
