Picnic for two

PICNIC BENEATH THE STARS
by: Stephanie Gilbert

The stars glared down at us from their black space,
As we began our picnic under their sky,
Because a smile was twitching on your face.

I watched your gaze sweep over this new place.
The light began to kindle in your dazed eyes,
While stars glared down at us from that black space.

Although our wine had a strong and bitter taste,
We drank the newly opened bottle dry;
I laughed as that stained smile stretched on your face

Our eyes had noticed Rigel's bright blue rays;
Some stars plunged down along our line of sight
With other stars' white glares in our black space.

The moon began to rise at half past eight.
It was time to tell the stars our last good byes
As you looked up with that smile still on your face.

I was glad that I could bring you to this place.
You said, "Thanks," seeing stars reflect my eyes,
Although the stars glared down from their black space,
Because your wide spread smile never left your face.
